Fluxus

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Wednesday night I went to the University of Michigan Museum of Art for the Fluxus event. The performance was interesting, funny, weird and like nothing I’d ever been to.

The evening began with the “Well-Healed Miscreants” distributing the programs that had been folded into paper airplanes. They were flying all over the Helmut Stern Auditorium. On the program were 28 pieces. Some lasted under a minute, others several minutes.

Ben Patterson started off the evening with “A Dozen for Carmen”. Each of the Well-Healed Miscreants walked from the back of the auditorium with a rose in their teeth, depositing them one by one in a blender that was half full of water. Patterson blended the water and roses, poured a wine glass full, and then, in one feel swoop, drank the whole thing.

Apparently the Fluxus movement began in the 1960’s and this performance art came out of the music world. Many of the pieces incorporated sound. “Nivea Cream Piece” consisted of four people approaching the a table with a jar of Nivea Cream, putting it on their hands, massaging it into their hands and each others’ in front of the microphone.

“Apples” was a piece with four people eating apples in front of the micorphone. “Lottery Ticket” was a piece with a single man sitting at a table with a microphone attached underneath using a nickel to scratch off lottery ticket after lottery ticket. “Wall Piece for Yoko Ono” included audience participation. A couple of the performers placing Post-It notes with targets drawn on them all over the auditorium walls. Then they asked us to all get out of our seats, find a target and, on the count of three, tap our heads to the target. The collective sound was quite a bit louder than I expected. Striking!!

My favorite piece was “Cow Pong” where all the Well-Healed Miscreants lined the stage, each holding a cow bell and ping pong ball. They each bounced the ping pong balls on the side of the cow bell until it fell off. Seven of them dropped out quite quickly. The three hung in there for a while longer. Finally it was just two players making an interesting combined rythym until one fell out and the other finished the piece by letting the ping pong ball come to rest on his bell.

Restorative Yoga Coming on February 17!

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Register now for the February 17 class from 6-7:30 PM! I’ll be leading a Restorative Yoga class Friday, February 17 at The Yoga Space in Ann Arbor. The fee is $20 and it’s helpful if you pre-register. This class will be similar to the restorative class I led last fall and summer with stations around the room with yogis moving from one station to the next. This sort of “circuit” of different stations was popular with the students who attended. Class size is very limited to a dozen people so register soon if you’re interested.

Caught!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Almost a week ago I spotted a ground hog in my front yard. When I asked him/her “Where do you think you’re going?” it went right under the front porch. I borrowed a live trap and so far I’ve caught a neighborhood cat and, yesterday, a young raccoon. At least I haven’t caught any skunks (so far)!

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

I’m considering entering a 5K Run and Walk next weekend. The Dexter-Ann Arbor race is a big deal here with a LOT of runners. I’m a walker, not a fast one, and not competitive when it comes to physical activity. My walk goal for May was to walk 30 miles. And, with just two days left I’m shy about four miles. I decided that this weekend I’d get out and walk 3.1 miles to see if I could do it. Both last night and this morning I managed to log 3.17 and 3.48 respectively.

Today, my iPod quit at the halfway point so I did the walk home without that World Music beat I choose to walk to. On that slow walk back I was thinking about the phrase “slow and steady wins the race”. Not in a million years will I win a race, slow or otherwise. It seems like a more appropriate sentiment would be “slow and steady fosters patience”. Or, “slow and steady eventually gets you there.” Or, “slow and steady cultivate perseverance”. In my case I hope it’s “slow and steady gets you across the finish line”.

Theme of the Month: Panorama

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Michigan is ugly in March so I struggled with the March theme of Panorama … until the last day of the month. Finally took myself out and shot for just about a half an hour and it worked (well enough) to my surprise. To see the panorama shots I took, you can start here: http://www.pixelgary.com/PAW/Theme/index.php?showimage=561

Restorative Yoga, April 8 at Harmony Yoga

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Simply put, restorative yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful poses, usually well supported by props (blankets, bolsters, blocks, straps) and held for several minutes.

Restorative classes are usually very relaxing and are a good complement to your current yoga practice. Because these are restful poses, the body has an opportunity to renew and heal. Countless studies have proven the physical and emotional benefits of this kind of practice.

I’ll be leading a Restorative Yoga class Friday, April 8 from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Harmony Yoga in Ann Arbor. The fee is $20 and it’s helpful if you pre-register since class size will be limited to a dozen. If you’re interested, let me know and I can get you a registration form/put you on the roster of participants.

Hope to see you there!

Yoga and Feldenkrais

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I have the great fortune to work with Dale Jensen this weekend. We are leading a Yoga & Feldenkrais workshop Saturday afternoon. This is a workshop designed to introduce participants to the Feldenkrais Method® and explore the relationship between Feldenkrais and Yoga. You can come to see how it might be possible to use Feldenkrais movement sequences to deepen your understanding and experience of yoga poses. We’ll be doing bhujangasana (cobra) and will see how the Feldenkrais lessons allow more freedom of movement in the upper back.

Please join us on Saturday, May 22, 1 to 3 PM at Harmony Yoga, 1955 Pauline Blvd, Suite 100B in Ann Arbor. The two hour workshop fee is $25. Hope to see you there.
