Driving the windy road from Spearfish Canyon to Deadwood we had an opportunity to site see from the car. We passed a restaurant called “Pizza Lab” and Mom said “That doesn’t sound good at all! Is their pizza an experiment”? We drove through Lead which is home of the Lead-Deadwood High School who are The Diggers! How perfect!

Spearfish Canyon

We took a couple of very short hikes in Spearfish Canyon today to a couple of waterfalls. The canyon reminds me of the Rocky Mountains, only quite a bit smaller. It’s quite lovely. The drive is windy, scenic and gorgeous. The water in the creek cooled us on a hot day and was visually appealing. The trails were accessible and

Devils Tower

Pam/ August 21, 2011/ Travel

We ventured into Wyoming today, a state I had previously not been in, to see Devils Tower. Almost immediately after the entrance is a Prairie Dog Town, where the black-tailed prairie dogs live and play. These communal animals have always been one of my favorites, although, like groundhogs, cause damage in fields and aren’t favorites of farmers. Once at the

Yoga on the road

Pam/ August 21, 2011/ Travel, Yoga

I left all my yoga props at home so for my practice this morning I used a stack of books (two novels, one guide book and a book of sudoku puzzles) instead of a block for virasana (hero pose). Supta padangustasana (supine hand to big toe pose) was against the door jam, followed by dead bug (no props necessary). To

Deadwood

Pam/ August 20, 2011/ Travel

Deadwood is a town created by the 1876 gold rush. The name came from the dead trees that grew on the canyon walls where Deadwood began. It’s history is full of wild, hardworking and hard drinking gamblers, including Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, both buried here in Mount Moriah Cemetery. In the 1960’s Deadwood fell on hard times. The

Aberdeen to Deadwood, via Gettysburg (SD)

Pam/ August 20, 2011/ Travel

We left Aberdeen this morning under a cover of clouds. Just enough in between them to have the sun streaming through like all those religious calendars my Grandma Lindberg used to have. The crops look good, especially the sunflowers, which are brilliant yellow, like a sea of sunshine. Barb says they are such a happy flower. We also passed corn

Aberdeen

We had dinner in Aberdeen with my Aunt Maudie and cousins Robb and Betsy. Being connected, or as Betsy said, “living here all my life”, has its perks. Bets got us a semi-private room at Maveric’s, a steak house in town. The food was good, but the best part was seeing and catching up with them. We haven’t seen each

Aberdeen via Dakota Magic

We headed out of Fargo today in the brand new Lucerne. I was the first driver of the day. We headed south on I-29, a flat, straight and wide open highway with a speed limit of 75 mph. There were times on the road when I could count the number of vehicles both ahead and behind me on one hand.

Fargo, August 18, 2011

Pam/ August 18, 2011/ Random Thoughts, Travel

I’m in Fargo again, the second time in a month. Flying in today the pilot approached from the north, which is unusual. In my memory the flight has approached from the south, flying over the entire city, right by the Fargo Dome and into Hector International. The flight pattern today allowed me to have a fabulous view of the patchwork

Pam/ June 16, 2011/ Books

The “The Fiction Class” is a novel about a fiction writing teacher, her life, and her class. Included at the ends of each chapter about her classes are the assignments. Here’s my take on assignment 2 – to write about a person in history having a meal. ASSIGNMENT TWO by Pam Lindberg Benjamin Franklin sat at the large table in
