Assignment One from “The Fiction Class”

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

I’m reading “The Fiction Class”, a novel about a fiction writing teacher, her life, and her class. Included at the ends of each chapter about her classes are the assignments. I’ve done a few of the assignments along the way and they’ve been fun.

Assignment One is to list five things you are obsessed with and write a paragraph about one of them. What five things are you obsessed with?

Caught!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Almost a week ago I spotted a ground hog in my front yard. When I asked him/her “Where do you think you’re going?” it went right under the front porch. I borrowed a live trap and so far I’ve caught a neighborhood cat and, yesterday, a young raccoon. At least I haven’t caught any skunks (so far)!

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

I’m considering entering a 5K Run and Walk next weekend. The Dexter-Ann Arbor race is a big deal here with a LOT of runners. I’m a walker, not a fast one, and not competitive when it comes to physical activity. My walk goal for May was to walk 30 miles. And, with just two days left I’m shy about four miles. I decided that this weekend I’d get out and walk 3.1 miles to see if I could do it. Both last night and this morning I managed to log 3.17 and 3.48 respectively.

Today, my iPod quit at the halfway point so I did the walk home without that World Music beat I choose to walk to. On that slow walk back I was thinking about the phrase “slow and steady wins the race”. Not in a million years will I win a race, slow or otherwise. It seems like a more appropriate sentiment would be “slow and steady fosters patience”. Or, “slow and steady eventually gets you there.” Or, “slow and steady cultivate perseverance”. In my case I hope it’s “slow and steady gets you across the finish line”.
